Canada To Raise GST Payments On July 4 To Support Families

Starting July 4, 2025, Canada will increase the Goods and Services Tax (GST) payments for eligible residents.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will send a bigger GST payment on July 4, 2025. This payment helps many Canadians cover some of the taxes they pay on goods and services. It is tax-free, so you keep the full amount. The payment aims to help those with low or moderate incomes.

Who Can Get the Payment?
Millions of Canadians qualify, including permanent residents, refugees, temporary residents, and international students. To get this payment, you must live in Canada for tax purposes. You also need to be 19 years or older—or younger if you have a spouse or kids. Your income must be below certain limits for you to qualify.

How Much Will You Get?
The amount depends on your family size and income. The CRA increased the payments for 2025. Here’s a quick look:

  • Single people can get up to $533 a year.
  • Couples without children can get up to $698 a year.
  • For each child under 19, families can get $184 more.

The payment reduces if your income is higher than set limits.

Key Payment Dates
The GST payment happens four times a year. For 2025–2026, expect these dates:

  • July 4, 2025
  • October 3, 2025
  • January 5, 2026
  • April 3, 2026

Payments arrive by direct deposit or mail within about 10 working days.

How to Get the Payment
If you already file taxes in Canada, you don’t need to apply. The CRA checks your tax return to decide if you qualify. They then send the payment automatically.

Newcomers, like international students or refugees, must apply in their first year. You do this by filling out a special form and sending it to the tax office. Be sure to apply early to avoid delays.

Other Benefits in July 2025
The GST payment is not the only help available. In July, eligible Canadians may also get:

  • Support for low-income workers
  • Monthly payments for families with kids
  • Energy and property tax relief in Ontario

Together, these help with rising living costs.

What to Do if You Don’t Get Your Payment
If you don’t receive your payment within 10 working days after July 4, call the CRA at 1-800-387-1193. They can help find out what happened.
