Eligible physicians from four countries can now avoid additional assessment and supervised-practice requirements.
A new Yukon pathway allows eligible family physicians trained in four countries to seek a licence without completing an additional practice assessment or supervised work period.
The change applies to qualified doctors from Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. They must have an opportunity to practise in Yukon and satisfy the Yukon Medical Council’s remaining registration requirements.
The territorial government announced the “Limited A” pathway on July 22, 2026. Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers issued a General Declaration of Need after the territory identified a shortage of family physicians.
The declaration, issued under Yukon’s Medical Profession Act and related regulation, gives the Yukon Medical Council authority to license eligible doctors through the Limited Family Practice Register. It follows findings from a report commissioned by the council. Before this change, physicians entering through that register had to complete a practice assessment and a period of clinical supervision. Those steps could extend the licensing process.
Officials said the four countries were selected because their medical training and professional standards are considered similar to those used in Canada. The government may eventually add jurisdictions recognized by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
The new route does not grant automatic approval. A physician must first have a Yukon practice opportunity and meet the medical council’s licensing conditions. The council remains responsible for reviewing credentials and deciding whether an applicant is qualified to practise.
Full application instructions were not yet visible on the council’s public licensing page on July 29. That page still carried older information saying applications for limited family-practice licences were not being accepted, indicating that online guidance may still be under revision.
The Yukon government described the pathway as part of its continuing effort to strengthen primary care, recruit physicians and improve access to medical services across the territory.
A separate government update released July 23 said nine doctors had moved to Yukon since November 2025. Three more were expected to arrive during August and September 2026, bringing the total to 12.
The arrivals include physicians working in different communities and areas of care. Three Francophone doctors were also confirmed for the summer, including two joining the Centre de santé Constellation Health Centre and another working in Whitehorse General Hospital’s emergency department.
Yukon’s move follows licensing reforms elsewhere in Canada. British Columbia changed its rules in July 2025 so certain U.S.-trained and certified doctors could receive full licences without further assessment, examination or training. B.C. expanded direct licensing again in July 2026 for eligible physicians trained in several approved countries.
Manitoba also removed the requirement for qualifying U.S. physicians to obtain provisional registration before seeking a full licence in June 2025.
The federal government has said it is working with provinces, territories and other partners to reduce credential-recognition barriers while maintaining professional standards and patient safety.
