Starting June 20, 2025, eligible Canadians living with disabilities can apply for the new Canada Disability Benefit (CDB)—a monthly financial support initiative aimed at reducing poverty and improving quality of life. If you or someone you know has a qualifying disability, this blog will walk you through everything you need to know about the benefit, including eligibility, how to apply, and what to expect.

What Is The Canada Disability Benefit?

The Canada Disability Benefit is part of the federal government’s broader Disability Inclusion Action Plan, designed to make Canada more inclusive and equitable. The benefit provides monthly payments of up to $200, adding up to $2,400 per year, to eligible adults between the ages of 18 and 64. The goal is to offer stable financial support to those who need it most.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the CDB, you must:

  • Be between 18 and 64 years old
  • Be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
  • Have filed your 2024 income tax return
  • If married or in a common-law partnership, your spouse or partner must also file their 2024 return

You do not need to wait for a government letter to apply. While Service Canada will be mailing out letters with unique application codes in June, applicants who don’t receive one can still apply by providing their mailing address and net income from line 23600 of their 2024 Notice of Assessment.

How To Apply

Applications open June 20, 2025 and can be submitted in three ways:

  • Online
  • By phone
  • In person at a Service Canada office

You'll need:

  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Direct deposit information (as this is the primary payment method)

Worried about the process? Don’t be. Several community-based organizations across Canada are offering help with the application process, including assistance with applying for the DTC.

When Will Payments Begin?

If your application is approved by June 30, 2025, you could receive your first payment in July 2025. That’s not all—the benefit allows for retroactive payments for up to 24 months from your application date. However, payments cannot be applied for any period before July 2025.

How Much Will You Receive?

The maximum benefit is $200 per month, but the actual amount depends on your adjusted family net income. The amount is indexed to inflation, meaning it will rise in future years as the cost of living increases—but it won’t drop even if inflation slows.

Why This Benefit Matters

The launch of the Canada Disability Benefit marks a significant milestone in disability advocacy and financial inclusion. For many Canadians living with disabilities, this program could mean more financial independence, less stress, and improved day-to-day living.

If you think you're eligible, mark your calendar for June 20 and get your documents ready. A more stable future could be just a few steps away.
