Canada Fast-Tracks Citizenship Proof for Trans Americans

Canada is fast-tracking citizenship certificate applications for some trans Americans with Canadian ancestry amid rising safety concerns and new eligibility rules.

Trans Americans with Canadian family roots are seeing some citizenship certificate applications processed more quickly, according to reports shared online by applicants.

The applications are for proof of Canadian citizenship certificates. These documents are issued to people who are already Canadian citizens by descent and need official proof of that status.

Interest in the certificates has grown sharply in the United States this year. The increase follows changes to Canada’s Citizenship Act last December, which removed the generational limit on citizenship inheritance.

That change made millions of Americans eligible to claim Canadian citizenship through ancestry. Among them are many trans Americans who say they are looking for more security because of the current political climate in the United States.

Some applications processed in weeks

This spring, thousands of Americans have applied for Canadian citizenship certificates. Many are doing so as a back-up plan, since the certificate can later be used to apply for a Canadian passport.

The higher demand has also affected wait times. Standard processing for proof of citizenship applications has reportedly doubled from five months to 10 months.

However, some users identifying as trans Americans have said online that their applications were processed in as little as two weeks. These faster decisions appear to fall under urgent processing rules used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Urgent processing rules explained

IRCC allows urgent processing for citizenship certificates in certain cases. According to the federal government’s help centre, this may apply when an applicant faces “potential harm or hardship” because of “sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or membership in particular groups.”

Urgent processing may also apply when a person needs access to Canadian health care.

Applicants who want urgent processing must include a written explanation with their proof of citizenship application. They must also provide supporting documents that show why their request should be treated as urgent.

IRCC says an officer will review the file and decide whether the person qualifies. If the officer accepts the request, the department will speed up the application. However, IRCC does not promise a specific processing time.

Citizenship proof can lead to a passport

Most Americans applying for proof of Canadian citizenship must submit a paper application. The package must include the correct completed form and copies of official documents showing their link to a Canadian ancestor.

Once applicants receive their citizenship certificate, they can use it to apply for a Canadian passport.

Canadian passport applicants can choose the gender marker printed on their passport. The available options are F for female, M for male, or X for another gender.

Applicants who choose a gender marker different from the one on their citizenship certificate or previous passport must also submit a gender identifier request form with their passport application.

For many trans Americans with Canadian ancestry, the process offers a practical option at a time of growing concern. While not every urgent request is guaranteed fast approval, the rules provide a path for people who can show they face harm or hardship.
