Indian students who plan to study in Canada will soon gain access to major new opportunities. Canada and India have agreed on a fresh talent strategy that opens the door to scholarships, easier study pathways, and joint academic programs.
On March 2, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office shared details of the new measures. The University of Toronto will provide $100 million in funding to support up to 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian students. These awards will help cover the cost of studying in Canada and aim to attract top talent.
The agreement also introduces 13 new partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities. Leaders from both countries hope these partnerships will encourage student exchanges, research projects, and closer academic ties.
The strategy also includes three new hybrid study locations in India. Dalhousie University will work with the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Tirupati to create an innovation campus.
The University of Toronto and McGill University will each open Centres of Excellence focused on artificial intelligence. These centres will bring together researchers and students from both countries to work on AI development and innovation.
Canada and India also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support collaboration in performing arts, visual arts, music, books, entertainment technology, and other creative fields.
Several Canadian universities have signed new agreements with Indian institutions. The University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University will work with O.P. Jindal Global University to promote student mobility and research projects.
Algoma University has strengthened partnerships with Parul University and Chandigarh University. These agreements will offer short courses, summer programs, and clear pathways for Indian students to continue their studies in Canada.
Dalhousie University has partnered with the SRM Institute of Science and Technology to create a Nursing Dual Degree Program. The program will include 25 approved seats, dual credentials from both institutions, and clinical experience in Canada. Dalhousie has also signed an agreement with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to support work in digital agriculture, climate-resilient farming, aquaculture, and animal husbandry.
Other universities, including the University of Guelph, Brock University, Royal Roads University, and Simon Fraser University, have also signed agreements focused on research, public health, sports management, business, and clean energy. Simon Fraser University will work with the Hydrogen Association of India to advance hydrogen research and clean-energy innovation.
The University of Toronto has formed partnerships with the Indian Institute of Science and Jio Institute to support joint work in artificial intelligence, management programs, and faculty exchanges.
These agreements follow a visit to India in February 2026 by more than 20 Canadian university presidents. The visit marked the largest academic delegation Canada has ever sent to India.
India remains one of the top countries sending students to Canada. Indian nationals also represent a large share of new permanent residents. More than 1.8 million Canadians claim Indian heritage, reflecting strong ties between the two nations.
With this new strategy, Canada and India aim to deepen academic cooperation and create lasting opportunities for students and researchers on both sides.
