Canada will begin sending out 17,860 invitations on July 28, 2025, giving citizens and permanent residents a chance to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency.
Some Canadian citizens and permanent residents will soon get the chance to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency. Starting July 28, 2025, the government will begin sending out invitations to eligible sponsors.
The invitations will go out over a two-week period. A total of 17,860 invitations will be sent. The goal is to receive 10,000 complete applications by the end of the year.
Only those who submitted the “Interest to Sponsor” form in 2020 will receive invitations. The government is not accepting new forms this year. The list from 2020 will be used again for this round.
If you do not get selected, don’t worry. You still have another option—the super visa program.
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) allows eligible Canadians to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada as permanent residents.
This program helps families reunite for the long term. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians can apply under this program.
Because more people apply than there are spots available, the government uses a lottery system. You can only apply if you receive an invitation.
The PGP has not accepted new submissions since 2020. All invitations sent this year will be based on that same pool of applicants.
If you don’t receive an invitation, you can still bring your parents or grandparents through the super visa program.
This option allows them to visit you in Canada for a longer period compared to regular visitor visas.
The super visa is for Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to host their parents or grandparents.
Under this program, visitors can stay in Canada for up to 10 years. This is much longer than the usual six-month visitor stay.
To apply for a super visa, your parents or grandparents must meet certain conditions. They must buy valid health insurance and must be allowed to enter Canada.
You, as the host, must agree to support them financially during their stay. You also need to meet a specific income level to qualify.
This program gives families a flexible and longer-term way to stay connected even if they are not selected for permanent residency through the PGP.
The Parents and Grandparents Program is a great chance for family reunification. While not everyone may receive an invitation, the super visa provides another helpful path. If you applied in 2020, check your email around July 28, 2025. This could be your chance to bring your loved ones to Canada for good.
