Canada Tops U.S. As No.1 Destination For International Students

A recent survey by ApplyBoard collected insights from 400 student recruitment professionals worldwide. These included education advisors in countries like India, South Korea, and Brazil. The results show that interest in studying abroad continues to grow rapidly, even with global challenges.

Demand for Study Abroad Keeps Growing

The dream of studying in another country is stronger than ever. Despite visa changes, border rules, and rising living costs, students are not backing down.

Over 20% of recruiters say they are now helping more students than before. Many students want not just a degree, but a chance to build a better future.

Canada offers good education, multicultural campuses, and career paths in fast-growing fields like AI, biotech, and green energy.

UK Still Leads, but Canada is Gaining Fast

The UK is still the top destination, thanks to its world-famous universities and new scholarships. But Canada has now passed the U.S. to become the second most popular choice.

Last year, the U.S. was on top. Now, students are choosing Canada more often, even with stricter immigration rules.

Canada scored well in the survey, with 42% calling it “very appealing.” Recruiters pointed to the strong job market, welcoming cities, and excellent education as key reasons.

Still, Canada’s new cap on study permits has lowered its score slightly. But demand remains strong, and the country’s appeal is still high.

Cost Matters: Canada Seen as Affordable

Studying abroad is expensive, so students are looking for value. The survey found that 90% of recruiters consider affordability a top factor.

Germany came out on top for budget-friendly education, followed by Ireland. Canada took third place for offering good value, especially with public colleges and paid co-op programs.

With rising costs in the U.S., UK, and Australia, many students are turning to more affordable countries without sacrificing quality.

Canada Wins on Safety and Welcoming Culture

Canada also ranked highest for safety and friendliness. A total of 84% said Canada is a safe and open place for international students.

Recruiters praised Canada’s anti-discrimination laws, cultural diversity, and support systems for new arrivals. These factors are very important for families sending their children abroad.

In contrast, only 50% viewed the U.S. as welcoming and safe. That’s down from 78% last year. Issues like gun violence, protests, and visa delays are hurting America’s reputation.

What Lies Ahead?

Canada may increase its permit limits in the future. But spots in popular programs like healthcare and tech will stay competitive.

Other countries like South Korea and Malaysia are also growing in popularity. Students and parents should look closely at post-study work rights before choosing.

Canada’s three-year work permit after graduation remains a big draw.
