Canada has introduced updated measures that allow certain Iranian nationals in the country to extend their work permits. The government began the new policy on March 1, 2026, and will keep it in place until March 31, 2027.

These updated rules apply only to specific workers from Iran who already live and work in Canada. Officials designed the program to give eligible individuals more time to remain employed while they stay in the country legally.

Who Can Apply for the Extension

Under the new policy, only Iranian nationals who meet several clear conditions can apply for the extension.

Applicants must hold a valid Iranian passport and must already live in Canada. They also need to hold a valid work permit when they submit the application and when immigration officials review the request.

Another key condition relates to the worker’s original permit. The initial work permit must have been issued on or before February 28, 2025.

The government has also placed a strict limit on how many times a person can benefit from this measure. Anyone who already received an extension under the same special policy cannot apply again.

In addition to these requirements, applicants must still meet the normal rules for work permits in Canada. Immigration officials will review eligibility, security checks, and other standard conditions before granting an extension.

Workers who qualify must submit their applications before March 31, 2027.

Changes Compared With Earlier Measures

The new policy follows the end of a previous program that supported Iranian nationals in Canada. That earlier policy expired on February 28, 2026.

Although the government introduced the new measures shortly after the previous program ended, the updated rules apply to a smaller group of people.

The earlier policy offered more flexibility. It allowed some Iranian nationals in Canada to apply for open work permits. It also permitted certain temporary residents to apply for study permits from within the country.

The new policy focuses only on extending existing work permits for Iranian workers who already hold valid permits.

Another major difference involves how eligibility works. Under the previous program, eligibility depended mainly on when a person arrived in Canada. Iranian nationals who entered the country on or before February 28, 2025 could benefit from those special provisions.

The updated program instead looks at the worker’s permit history. Only those who received their initial work permit by February 28, 2025 may apply.

Fewer Options for Visitors and Students

The earlier program also covered a wider group of temporary residents. Some visitors and students could change their status within Canada under those special rules.

Under the current measures, that option no longer exists. Visitors and students must now follow the normal immigration process if they wish to apply for study or work permits.

Officials have also clarified that the extension remains a one-time opportunity. Workers who already received an extension under these special provisions cannot request another one.

Policy Aims to Provide Limited Support

The government says the updated measures aim to support Iranian nationals who already work in Canada while keeping immigration rules clear and focused.

The program offers a temporary solution for eligible workers who need more time to stay employed. At the same time, the narrower rules show a shift toward more limited relief compared with the earlier policy.

Eligible Iranian workers who wish to remain in Canada under this program must ensure they apply before the March 31, 2027 deadline.
