Canadian Passport Beats US Again in Global Ranking

Canada holds the eighth spot globally, with its passport giving access to 184 countries without a visa.

Canada's passport remains one of the most powerful travel documents in the world. In the latest global index released on July 22, Canada secured the eighth spot. It shares this position with the United Arab Emirates and Estonia.

The passport index ranks countries based on how many destinations their citizens can visit without needing a visa beforehand.

Canadian passport holders can now travel to 184 countries without a visa.

Slight Drop, But Still Ahead of the US

In January 2025, Canada held the seventh spot and allowed access to 188 destinations. Although the number of visa-free countries dropped slightly, Canada continues to outrank the United States.

This marks the second time in history that the Canadian passport has ranked above the US since the index began in 2006.

The US passport is now in 10th place. It risks falling out of the top 10 for the first time in the index’s 20-year history.

Who Tops the List?

Singapore holds the number one spot. Its citizens can travel to 193 countries without a visa.

Japan and South Korea are tied for second place with 190 visa-free destinations each.

Seven European countries—including Germany, France, and Italy—share third place. Each of them gives access to 189 destinations.

Other Countries on the Move

India made the biggest improvement, jumping from 85th to 77th place in just six months. It added two new visa-free countries to its list.

Saudi Arabia saw the largest gain in terms of access, adding four more destinations.

In contrast, both the UK and US lost one spot since January.

Looking over the past decade, Venezuela dropped the most, falling 15 places. The US lost eight spots, while Canada slipped four.

Why the Canadian Passport Stands Out

Besides access to 184 countries, the Canadian passport makes travel smoother for citizens. It also helps speed up re-entry into Canada.

Many Canadians get their citizenship at birth or through Canadian parents.

Those who immigrate and become naturalized citizens must first live in Canada as permanent residents. They need to stay in the country for at least three years before applying for citizenship.

A Canadian passport is more than just a travel document—it’s a symbol of global mobility and strong international relations.
