Ontario Lists 9 Key Jobs For 2025 Permanent Residency Path

Ontario’s 2025 immigration plan focuses on 9 key jobs in health and tech.

Ontario’s Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) continues to be one of the most direct ways to get permanent residency in Canada. The province shared new data on July 11, 2025, highlighting important trends from last year and what to expect this year.

In 2024, Ontario had a quota of 21,500 nominations. The province used up all of them by December. However, in 2025, that number is almost cut in half. The new quota stands at just 10,750. Because of this, Ontario is focusing more on the right jobs and key sectors.

9 Jobs in High Demand for PR

In 2024, just nine jobs made up 45% of all nominations. That’s over 9,500 of the 21,000 total spots. These jobs are likely to stay important in 2025 too.

Healthcare Jobs (15% of all nominations):
Ontario’s hospitals and clinics need more workers. These healthcare roles received over 3,200 nominations:

  • Registered Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses
  • Pharmacists
  • Family Doctors and General Practitioners
  • Nurse Aides and Patient Service Staff

These jobs are essential to the healthcare system and remain top priorities.

Tech Jobs (30% of all nominations):
Ontario also needs tech workers. More than 6,300 nominations went to IT roles in 2024. These include:

  • Software Engineers and Designers
  • Software Developers and Programmers
  • IT Support Technicians
  • Information Systems Specialists
  • Business Systems Specialists

Ontario plans to focus on these fields again this year.

Streams Used for 2024 Nominations

The nominations were divided across different categories. Here are the most used ones:

  • Human Capital Priorities: 6,330 nominations
  • Skilled Trades: 4,101 nominations
  • Masters Graduates: 3,810 nominations
  • International Students: 3,283 nominations
  • Foreign Workers: 2,731 nominations
  • PhD Graduates: 446 nominations
  • In-Demand Skills: 408 nominations
  • French-Speaking Skilled Workers: 300 nominations
  • Entrepreneurs: 91 nominations

New Policy: Application Returns

On July 2, 2025, OINP introduced a new rule. They can now return applications if they do not meet the current job needs. If this happens, applicants will get a full refund. This helps the province select candidates who fit the labour market better.

So, it’s more important than ever to apply carefully, especially for jobs in healthcare and tech.

What To Expect in 2025

Ontario will still look for skilled workers. But with fewer spots, the competition will be stronger.

Here’s what to know:

  • Harder to Get In: Fewer slots mean Ontario will be more selective.
  • Faster Processing: The new return policy allows OINP to work more efficiently.
  • Key Focus Areas: Healthcare and tech will stay on top of the list.
  • Support for Students and French-Speakers: These groups still have strong options.
  • Need for Accuracy: Mistakes in your application may lead to rejection.

Applicants should follow updates and apply early to increase their chances.
