Quebec plans to introduce higher financial proof requirements for study permits starting January 1, 2026.
Quebec will raise its proof of funds rules for study permits on January 1, 2026. The province will ask some students to show more than triple the current amount. The new rules will affect students of all ages. They will also affect families who plan to study together.
The province will apply the increases to students who apply for their first study permit. It will also apply them to students who renew their permits.
Single students under 18 will see the largest jump. They will need $24,617 for basic needs instead of $7,756. Students 18 and older will also face a higher amount. Their required funds will rise from $15,508 to $24,617.
Families will see bigger changes. The amount grows as more family members join the application. A family of four with two adults and two children will need $49,234. The current rule asks for $27,499.
These amounts only cover basic needs. Students must also show that they can pay tuition and travel costs.
Quebec can set its own numbers because it has a special deal with the federal government. Other provinces follow federal amounts set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The new changes will place Quebec above the rest of the country.
Students who want to study in Quebec will show proof of funds more than once. They must meet both Quebec and federal checks.
Students start with an application for a Quebec Acceptance Certificate, known as the CAQ. Quebec reviews their funds before it gives the CAQ. Students show proof again when they renew the CAQ.
After they get the CAQ, students apply for a study permit from the federal government. Federal officers then check the same funds. Students repeat this step when they ask to extend their study permit.
Quebec and the federal government both look at the same pool of money. Students do not need extra funds for the federal check.
Quebec listed several documents that can show financial capacity. Students can present recent transfers of money. These can include proof of deposits to a Quebec bank. They may show other assets or income sources.
Students may submit a recent authorization to transfer funds from a country that controls money flow. Quebec will only accept this if the home country limits transfers.
Scholarship letters help as long as they show the monthly and yearly amounts. Students can also include recent pay slips and bank letters. Bank letters must show current balances. Quebec even offers a sample format.
Tax notices and three months of bank statements also work. Bank statements must show the name of the account holder. Students can include bank books too, along with proof of ownership.
