Canada gives young people from many countries the chance to live and work here for as long as two years under the International Experience Canada program.
Young people from dozens of countries across Europe, Asia, South America and Oceania now have a clearer path to live and work in Canada for up to two years. Canada offers these opportunities through the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, which gives early-career workers a chance to gain job experience while exploring the country.
Citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 — or 18 and 30 for some countries — can apply for priority-access work permits under the IEC program. Eligible countries include Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Chile, Portugal, Sweden and many others across Europe and beyond.
Each country has its own age cap and limits on how many times a person can take part. Some young people can participate only once in their lifetime. Others may apply a second or even third time, depending on their country of citizenship.
Applicants must meet more than just age and nationality rules. They must hold a valid passport for the full length of their stay. They must show proof of health insurance and carry at least $2,500 CAD to cover early living costs. They must also buy a round-trip ticket or show proof that they can afford one.
Canada also checks each applicant’s background. Anyone with serious criminal issues or major medical concerns may not qualify. Participants must travel alone, as the program does not allow dependents to join them.
Most applicants choose between two main options: the Working Holiday stream or the Young Professionals stream.
The Working Holiday permit allows greater freedom. It lets participants work for almost any employer in Canada. This option suits those who want flexibility in choosing jobs or travelling across the country.
The Young Professionals permit works differently. It ties the applicant to one employer and one position. Applicants must secure a signed job offer before they apply. The job must support their professional growth.
Although Canada designed the IEC program to remain simpler than many other work permits, demand often exceeds supply. Officials manage the system through country-based pools and random draws. Eligible candidates enter the pool and wait for an invitation to apply.
Applicants must first create an online profile and enter the IEC pool. When officials send an invitation, candidates have 10 days to accept it. They then get 20 days to submit a full application.
Some participants may also need a visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter Canada. Processing times vary depending on demand. At present, authorities process most IEC permits in about five weeks.
Officials usually open the pools in December and begin sending invitations in January each year.
The IEC program remains easier to access than many other Canadian work permits. Traditional work permits often require employers to prove that no Canadian worker can fill the job. The IEC program removes that step, which makes it attractive for young workers seeking international experience.
For many global youth, Canada offers not only a job opportunity but also a chance to build skills, travel and experience life in a new country.
