Starting August 21, Express Entry candidates need a medical exam before applying for PR, unless they qualify for an exemption.
Starting 21 August, applicants for Canadian permanent residence (PR) through Express Entry must complete a medical exam before submitting their application. This is called an upfront Immigration Medical Exam (IME). Previously, candidates completed the IME only after receiving a request from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Who Can Be Exempt
Some applicants do not need a new IME. To qualify, they must meet all of these conditions:
IRCC warns applicants to only do an IME after receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) for PR.
IME Validity
Medical exams stay valid for 12 months from the exam date. All immediate family members, including spouse, dependent children, and even dependent children of dependent children, must complete the IME. This applies even if some family members are not moving to Canada.
Who Can Conduct an IME
Only IRCC-approved panel physicians can perform IMEs. They use the eMedical program to send results directly to IRCC. Applicants can find the nearest panel physician through IRCC’s official website.
Submitting IME Results
After completing an IME, candidates receive either an information printout sheet or the IMM 1017B Upfront Medical Report form. When applying online, applicants must upload one of these documents in the Express Entry Profile Builder to prove they completed the exam.
Using Old IME Results
Applicants who finished an IME in the last five years and meet all exemption conditions can use their old results. Acceptable proof includes:
