Canada’s immigration department released new processing times for visas, permanent residency, citizenship, and passports for June 2025.
Canada’s immigration office has shared new updates on how long it takes to process different immigration applications as of June 5, 2025. These updates are very important for people applying for visas, permanent residency, citizenship, or passports. Knowing these timelines helps applicants plan better and avoid surprises.
The immigration office updates processing times regularly. They use real data to make sure that about 80% of applications finish within the stated time. Since 2022, they have improved their system with advanced tools. Temporary visas and permanent residency cards get weekly updates, while citizenship and family sponsorships are updated monthly.
These timelines change depending on how many people apply and how much work the office can handle. So, they are a good guide but not a promise.
Citizenship Processing Times
As of June 5, 2025, getting citizenship takes about 10 months. Applying for a citizenship certificate takes 5 months, which is one month longer than before. Some processes like renouncing citizenship take about 7 months. People who applied before April 14, 2025, will get a receipt notice soon. If you apply for certificates outside Canada or the U.S., expect some delays.
The wait for new PR cards is about 49 days now, one day longer than before. Renewals take about 14 days, two days longer than the last update. Make sure your application is complete to avoid extra delays.
The time to sponsor family members depends on where they live. For example, sponsoring a spouse outside Canada (except Quebec) takes about 11 months now, up by one month. Quebec takes much longer, about 37 to 38 months for spouses, and up to 48 months for parents or grandparents. Quebec’s special immigration rules cause these delays, so plan carefully.
Passport services remain steady. New passports take 10 business days if applied in person, or 20 business days by mail. Faster options include urgent pick-up by the next business day or express pick-up in 2 to 9 days. These times did not change in this update.
For skilled workers and business immigrants, the processing times vary. The Canadian Experience Class takes about 5 months. Skilled Worker programs now take 6 months, up by one month. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) through Express Entry takes 8 months, which is 3 months longer. Some business and self-employed applications can take several years.
The time to get visitor, study, or work visas depends on the country you apply from. For example, visitor visas from India take about 21 days now, two days longer. Study permits from India take 5 weeks, which is shorter than before. Work permits from India take about 12 weeks, a week less than the previous update. The times for other countries change a bit too.
This update gives a clear picture of what to expect when applying to come to Canada. Keep these timelines in mind to plan your next steps well and avoid surprises.
