3 Important Ontario Laws Taking Effect July 2025

Three new laws will take effect across Ontario in July 2025.

Three major laws will take effect in Ontario this July. These rules aim to protect renters, give more rights to gig workers, and offer support to people with disabilities. From housing to jobs to income help, these laws cover key areas that touch many lives.

New Rule to Stop Unfair Tenant Evictions

Starting July 31, 2025, Toronto will enforce a new bylaw. It targets landlords who evict tenants under the excuse of doing renovations. These are called “renovictions.”

Now, landlords must get a special renovation licence before giving eviction notices. They must meet strict rules first. That includes getting permits, hiring licensed experts, and proving the renovation needs the unit empty.

Landlords must also:

  • Notify tenants early about the plans
  • Offer help with temporary housing or rent support
  • Guarantee tenants can return at the same rent
  • Pay compensation if tenants don’t return

City inspectors will monitor the process. Breaking the rules can lead to big fines — up to $100,000 for illegal evictions.

Gig Workers Get Stronger Job Protections

On July 1, 2025, Ontario will introduce the Digital Platform Workers’ Rights Act. It gives better pay and job security to workers on apps like Uber or DoorDash.

Under the new law, gig workers will:

  • Get at least the minimum wage for time spent on jobs
  • Receive clear details on how their pay is calculated
  • Keep all their tips
  • Be paid on a set schedule
  • Be told why they’re removed from a platform, if it happens
  • Settle disputes in Ontario

This law covers all gig workers, even if they aren’t classified as employees. Businesses must follow strict rules or face heavy fines — up to $500,000 for repeat offenses.

New Money Support for People With Disabilities

Starting July 2025, Canada will launch the Canada Disability Benefit. It gives up to $200 monthly ($2,400 per year) to low-income adults with disabilities.

To qualify, people must:

  • Be aged 18 to 64
  • Live in Canada for tax reasons
  • Be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
  • Have filed a 2024 tax return

People with low income (under $23,000 yearly) will receive full benefits. Those with higher income will receive smaller amounts. Some temporary residents may also qualify.

Applications opened on June 20, 2025. Those approved by June 30 will get payments starting in July. Late applicants can still receive payments backdated up to two years.

You can apply online, by phone, by mail, or at Service Canada offices.

Why These Changes Matter

These laws protect those who are often left out — renters, gig workers, and people with disabilities. They aim to stop unfair evictions, raise job standards, and ease financial stress for those in need.
