Nova Scotia Reveals Top Jobs For Rural PR In Pictou County

Pictou County has announced the jobs it will focus on for the 2025 Rural Immigration Program.

Pictou County, located two hours from Halifax, has just shared its updated list of priority sectors and occupations for the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) for 2025. This federal program helps foreign workers with job offers from local companies apply for permanent residency in Canada.

Areas covered under Pictou County’s RCIP
The RCIP area includes several communities:

  • Pictou Landing First Nation
  • Municipality of Pictou County
  • Towns of New Glasgow, Pictou, Stellarton, Trenton, and Westville

Who can apply?
To qualify, foreign workers need a job offer from a designated employer in the community. The job must match one of the listed priority occupations. But that’s not all. Applicants must also:

  • Have 1 year of work experience (1,560 hours) in the last 3 years
  • Or meet the international graduate exemption
  • Prove their language skills
  • Show proof of education (Canadian or equivalent foreign degree)
  • Have enough savings to support themselves and their family

Focus sectors for 2025
Each community chooses five key sectors for the program. For 2025, Pictou County has picked:

  • Business, finance, and administration
  • Health
  • Sales and service
  • Trades, transport, and equipment operation
  • Manufacturing

Employers in these sectors can apply to join the program. Once approved, they can offer jobs to foreign workers under the RCIP.

In-demand occupations in Pictou County
Here are some of the top jobs that give applicants a better chance at PR:

  • Bookkeepers
  • Carpenters
  • Cooks
  • Cybersecurity experts
  • Data scientists
  • Software developers
  • Business systems specialists
  • Pharmacists
  • Plumbers
  • Retail sales supervisors
  • Printing press operators
  • Restaurant managers
  • Roofers
  • Sheet metal workers
  • Telecom techs
  • Woodworking machine operators

Note: Cooks, restaurant managers, and retail sales supervisors will each get no more than 10% of the total yearly RCIP spots.

How the process works
Once a designated employer finds a suitable worker for a listed job, they must fill out a Recommendation Application. This application goes to the Pictou County Partnership.

Without this recommendation, a worker cannot apply for permanent residence through RCIP. Once recommended, the worker can then apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for PR and a work permit if needed.

Employers can submit applications from the 1st to the 15th of every month. In December, the last date to apply is the 10th.

Why this matters
The RCIP helps smaller communities in Canada fill job gaps. It also gives foreign workers a chance to live and build a future in places like Pictou County. This program is especially helpful for rural areas that need skilled workers but struggle to attract them.
