Canada Opens Study Permits to Families of International Students and Workers

Canada now offers a simpler path for the families of international students and foreign workers to begin their studies here.

Canada now offers a simpler way for spouses, partners, and dependent children of foreign workers and international students to study in the country. These family members receive open study permits. These permits let them choose any school. Officers do not tie the permit to one institution. This change gives families more freedom and fewer steps.

These study permits do not require a Provincial Attestation Letter. They also do not require a letter of admission when applying. Many schools often ask for deposits before students apply for permits. This rule removes that pressure for these family members. They can start their program without worrying about caps or school limits.

Who Qualifies for These Study Permits

Immigration rules list who can qualify as “accompanying family members.” The group includes a spouse, a common-law partner, and dependent children. It also includes their dependent children. They must travel with the main applicant and remain part of the same application.

A foreign national does not need a letter of acceptance if two clear conditions apply. They must apply before entering Canada. They must also show that the main applicant already holds written approval for a study or work permit before arrival. This helps spouses and partners who want to start their studies without delay.

The study permit stays valid until the principal applicant’s permit expires. This keeps both timelines in sync and avoids confusion for families.

How the Application Works

A common example involves a student couple. The principal student receives an offer from a recognized school. They gather documents and apply for a study or work permit from outside Canada. They then receive written approval before travel.

The spouse or partner then applies as an accompanying family member. They also apply from outside Canada. They do not need a letter of acceptance. Instead, they submit proof of their relationship. They also include the principal student’s approval letter and other supporting records.

Officers review the application. If everything meets the rules, the spouse receives an open study permit. They can choose their school afterward. They can also apply early if they want a head start. The permit gives them full freedom to select a school in any province.

This option also lowers the initial cost of attending a Canadian school. Many institutions require a deposit to secure a space. Since accompanying family members do not count toward provincial permit caps, some schools may remove that deposit requirement. This depends on the school’s own policies.

When Rules Change Later

The exemption only applies to the first application made from outside Canada. If a family member later wants to extend their permit, or switch schools, they must follow regular rules. They would then need a letter of acceptance and any required provincial documents. The same applies if they change their level of study. Renewal follows the standard process for all students in Canada.
