Toronto University Ranks Fourth Globally for Research

The University of Toronto placed fourth worldwide for academic research in CWUR’s 2026 ranking.

The University of Toronto has ranked ahead of Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Princeton and several Ivy League institutions in a major global research ranking.

The Center for World University Rankings, known as CWUR, released its 2026 Global 2,000 list on June 1. In the latest edition, the University of Toronto placed fourth in the world for academic research.

Only three institutions ranked higher in research: Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Strong Research Performance Continues

The University of Toronto has remained among the world’s top five institutions for research since 2019. Last year, it placed fifth in the same research category.

This year’s fourth-place finish puts the Canadian university ahead of some of the most recognized names in higher education, including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Yale University and Princeton University.

While U of T ranked fourth for research, it placed 23rd overall in the full CWUR global ranking.

How Research Rank Is Measured

CWUR calculates a university’s research score by looking at four main areas.

The first is research output, which measures the total number of published research articles. The second is high-quality publications, based on the number of articles published in top-tier journals.

The third area is research influence, which looks at articles published in highly influential journals. The fourth is citation impact, which measures the number of highly cited research articles linked to the institution.

Together, these areas help show how much research a university produces, where it is published and how often other researchers use or reference that work.

Research Carries Major Weight

Research makes up 40 per cent of a university’s total score under CWUR’s ranking system.

The remaining score comes from three other factors. Education accounts for 25 per cent and reflects the academic distinction of a university’s alumni, adjusted for institutional size.

Employability also counts for 25 per cent and looks at the career success of alumni. Faculty makes up 10 per cent and recognizes faculty members who have received major academic honours.

CWUR says it does not rely on surveys or data submitted by universities. Instead, it uses its own assessment method across these four areas.

Global Competition Remains Strong

CWUR reviewed 21,291 institutions around the world for its 2026 edition. The highest-ranked universities were included in the Global 2,000 list.

Harvard University placed first overall and first in research. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked second overall, while Stanford University placed third overall and third in research.

Cambridge ranked fourth overall, while Oxford placed fifth overall and fifth in research. The University of Toronto ranked 23rd overall but stood out strongly in research, placing fourth in that category.

This marks the 15th edition of CWUR’s global university rankings. The organization first released its university ranking list in 2012.
