New Brunswick rolled out significant updates to its immigration programs beginning February 3, marking a clear shift in how the province selects newcomers.
The Government of New Brunswick has announced wide-ranging changes to its immigration programs, bringing new limits on eligible jobs and reshaping how applications move forward. The updates affect both local and overseas applicants under the provincial nominee system and the Atlantic Immigration Program.
Officials shared the changes on February 3, saying the province wants to better match immigration with economic needs.
Starting February 3, the province stopped accepting new expressions of interest from people working in the accommodation and food services sector under its Express Entry and Skilled Worker streams. The government also stopped issuing invitations to apply to candidates in this sector.
In addition, the province removed several occupations from consideration under the Skilled Worker Stream. These include cashiers, fish and seafood plant workers, food processing labourers, store shelf stockers, shippers and receivers, and service station attendants.
Under the Express Entry stream, New Brunswick also placed limits on jobs such as retail sales supervisors, retail and wholesale butchers, retail buyers, and trade managers.
Officials noted that some workers may still submit an expression of interest if their employer does not directly operate in the accommodation and food services sector.
The provincial nominee program now places stronger limits on lower-wage retail, food, and processing roles. The government said these steps help direct nominations toward jobs that support long-term growth.
As a result, people working in the listed occupations will no longer receive invitations to apply, even if they meet other requirements.
The province also extended its Private Career College Graduate Pilot until the end of 2026, but only in a limited way. This extension applies to international students already studying at New Brunswick campuses of Oulton College or Eastern College whose programs end after the pilot’s original closing date.
The pilot launched in September 2022 as a three-year project. Once it ends in 2026, the province will stop issuing nominations through this pathway.
New Brunswick also changed how employers apply under the Atlantic Immigration Program. The province now uses a candidate pool system for endorsement requests from approved employers.
At the same time, officials paused new employer designation applications while they review existing employers and program goals.
For now, the province limits job offers for overseas candidates to province-led recruitment efforts in healthcare, education, and construction trades.
The government also stopped accepting endorsement applications for accommodation and food services roles. It added eight more occupations to the restricted list, including retail salespersons, retail buyers, trade managers, and customer service representatives.
These changes narrow access to immigration pathways for certain workers while opening space for roles the province views as more critical. Officials said the new rules help ensure immigration supports New Brunswick’s workforce needs.
