Nipissing District will receive up to 150 provincial nomination spaces under Ontario's regional immigration initiative, offering eligible foreign workers a potential route to permanent residence.
Ontario has announced that Nipissing District, which includes North Bay, will receive up to 150 provincial immigration nomination spaces in 2027. The allocation is part of the province's efforts to attract skilled foreign workers to smaller communities experiencing labour shortages.
The City of North Bay's Economic Development Department published the allocation on October 26, 2026, under the Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) initiative. The program operates through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP).
The city's official website confirms the allocation, although the province has not published a complete breakdown of nomination spaces for all participating regions.
Foreign workers interested in the initiative must have a qualifying job offer from an employer located within Nipissing District.
Applicants must also meet the eligibility requirements of an applicable OINP immigration stream and submit an online Expression of Interest (EOI) with their employer's support.
The OINP reviews candidate profiles and selects individuals who may apply for provincial nomination.
Candidates who receive an invitation can submit their nomination applications. If Ontario approves them, they can apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residence.
A provincial nomination does not automatically grant permanent residence. The federal government makes the final decision.
Ontario currently identifies the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream as its active provincial immigration pathway, while REDI provides dedicated regional opportunities through the existing OINP process.
Nipissing District is one of six regions chosen to participate in the renewed REDI initiative.
The other participating regions are Greater Sudbury/Grand Sudbury, Kenora District, Rainy River District, Renfrew County and Thunder Bay.
Ontario announced the participating communities on October 14, 2026. The province uses geographic boundaries established by Statistics Canada to determine which communities qualify.
As of November 3, Nipissing District and Thunder Bay were the only participating regions to have publicly confirmed their individual nomination allocations.
Both regions have announced 150 nomination spaces for 2027.
Ontario previously operated REDI between January 2 and December 31, 2025.
During that period, the province distributed 800 nomination spaces across four participating regions.
Lanark County, Leeds and Grenville, Sarnia-Lambton and Thunder Bay each received 200 spaces.
The renewed initiative will continue through December 31, 2027, supporting communities outside the Greater Toronto Area that need skilled workers.
Ontario has yet to publish a complete provincial breakdown explaining how all REDI nominations will be distributed in 2027.
The initiative could provide additional opportunities for qualified workers seeking permanent residence while helping regional employers address hiring challenges.
Interested candidates should monitor official OINP announcements and confirm their eligibility before submitting an Expression of Interest.
Employers must also understand their responsibilities when supporting foreign workers through the nomination process.
For now, Nipissing District's confirmed allocation provides greater clarity for workers and businesses preparing for immigration opportunities in 2027.
