Express Entry Pool Shrinks as High CRS Scores Rise

New IRCC data shows fewer profiles overall but stronger competition at the top.

Canada’s Express Entry pool became smaller by August 3, even as the number of candidates with Comprehensive Ranking System scores between 501 and 600 rose sharply.

Pool Falls by 2,433 Profiles

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada reported 229,100 profiles on August 3, down from 231,533 on July 19. The pool therefore lost 2,433 candidates.

The largest declines appeared in several middle score ranges. The 401–410 band fell by 1,564 profiles, the 411–420 range dropped by 1,134, and the 351–400 group declined by 1,000.

Every range up to 470 recorded a decrease. Most groups above 470 grew. The 471–480 range added 249 candidates, the 481–490 group gained 275, and the 491–500 band increased by 59.

Strongest growth came in the 501–600 range, which added 1,572 profiles to reach 19,705. The 601–1,200 band slipped by 11 to 500 candidates.

Competition Remains Strongest Near the Top

Candidates scoring from 501 to 600 represented 8.60 per cent of the pool and ranked between the 91.18th and 99.78th percentiles.

The largest group remained the 351–400 range, with 50,107 candidates, or 21.87 per cent of profiles. The 471–480 range held 16,368 candidates, while 16,057 scored between 461 and 470.

Percentile figures show the proportion of candidates with scores equal to or below each band’s upper limit.

Four Draws Affected the Snapshot

IRCC held four selection rounds between July 19 and August 3, issuing 7,515 invitations.

A Provincial Nominee Program draw on July 20 invited 511 candidates with a cutoff of 744. A Canadian Experience Class draw on July 21 issued 2,000 invitations at 516.

On July 22, a French-language proficiency round invited 5,000 candidates with a minimum score of 399. On July 23, IRCC held its first Skilled Military Recruits draw since introducing the category in February. Four candidates were invited at 368.

The August 3 figures exclude two later rounds. A Provincial Nominee Program draw on August 4 issued 507 invitations at 768. A Canadian Experience Class draw on August 5 invited 3,000 candidates at 516.

After those rounds, IRCC had issued 108,123 Express Entry invitations.

How the System Works

Express Entry manages applications under the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program for economic immigrants settling outside Quebec.

Candidates receive CRS scores based on age, education, official-language ability and work experience. IRCC holds general, program-specific and category-based draws.

Ten categories cover French-language proficiency and occupations in healthcare and social services, trades, science and technology, education and transport.

Category-based rounds often have lower cutoffs. Healthcare and social services draws this year ranged from 462 to 476, compared with 507 to 518 for Canadian Experience Class rounds. Some narrow categories issue fewer invitations; the latest Physicians with Canadian Work Experience draw invited 271 people.

Invited candidates have 60 days to submit permanent residence applications. Express Entry applications have historically taken about six months, while base Provincial Nominee Program cases have recently taken about 12 to 20 months. Approved applicants receive confirmation of permanent residence before completing the landing process in Canada.
