Four new Canadian studies find that Express Entry immigrants generally earn more, secure employment more often and experience greater occupational stability.

Four Canadian studies released in September 2026 have found that immigrants selected through Express Entry generally achieve stronger employment and earnings outcomes than other economic immigrants.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) examined employment rates, income, weekly wages and changes in occupations after newcomers became permanent residents.

Researchers used the Longitudinal Immigration Database and information linked to the 2021 Census. Their findings cover roughly five to six years after admission, rather than immigrants' entire careers.

How Express Entry Immigrants Performed

Across the four studies, Express Entry immigrants were more likely to find employment and generally earned higher incomes and weekly wages than economic immigrants selected outside the system.

They were also more likely to remain in their occupations and less likely to move into lower-skilled work.

These results describe patterns among groups of immigrants. They do not guarantee that every successful Express Entry applicant will find employment or earn a higher salary.

Language, Education and Canadian Experience

Researchers identified official language proficiency, educational attainment and Canadian work experience as important factors linked to positive outcomes.

Strong English or French skills were associated with higher employment, better earnings and a greater likelihood of remaining in the same occupation.

Education showed a stronger relationship with wages and occupational stability than with finding work immediately after arrival.

Canadian work experience also mattered. Immigrants with more experience generally earned better wages and were more likely to maintain their occupational position.

Why Earlier Earnings Matter

Employment income earned before receiving permanent residence emerged as one of the strongest indicators of later earnings.

Those who had earned higher salaries before admission generally continued to perform well afterward.

Surprisingly, applicants with very low earnings before admission sometimes experienced worse outcomes than those without any pre-admission employment income.

This suggests the quality of previous employment may matter more than simply having worked in Canada.

Job Offers and Occupation Types

Immigrants in TEER 0 and TEER 1 occupations, including management and professional jobs, generally recorded stronger employment and wage outcomes.

Researchers also found that staying in the same occupation was associated with higher earnings, even compared with moving into another position of similar or greater skill.

Job offers were linked with modest earnings advantages after accounting for other characteristics, although senior management offers showed stronger results.

Not All Bonus Points Predict Earnings

The studies found limited or inconsistent links between measured outcomes and several CRS bonus factors, including siblings in Canada, Canadian education bonus points, French-language bonus points and spouse-related characteristics.

These factors may still support other immigration goals, particularly the growth of French-speaking communities.

What This Means for Applicants

The research does not change Express Entry eligibility or Comprehensive Ranking System scoring rules.

However, it offers evidence for policymakers considering future changes.

Applicants should continue following current immigration requirements while strengthening language skills, documenting education and work experience, and researching employment opportunities.

IRCC says longer-term research is needed before drawing conclusions about immigrants' careers beyond the period covered by these studies. Their findings highlight measurable differences between pathways.
