More Canadians can now renew passports online as Ottawa expands daily capacity ahead of the busy summer season.
As Canadians prepare for summer trips, the federal government has expanded access to its online passport renewal service.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has raised the daily limit for online passport renewal applications to 1,500. The change is meant to help eligible Canadians renew before demand peaks.
The limit follows earlier increases. IRCC raised capacity to 1,000 applications a day in October 2025, then to 1,250 in March 2026. The online renewal pilot first opened in December 2024 to a smaller group of Canadians.
IRCC says the gradual rollout lets officials test the system and monitor performance while keeping the process stable.
The cap resets twice each day, at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time. Applicants who cannot access the system may have another chance later.
IRCC has indicated that more capacity may be added as testing continues.
The service is not open to everyone. Applicants must renew their own passport and have both a Canadian residential and mailing address.
They must have received their current passport at age 16 or older. They also need a regular blue Canadian passport issued within the past 15 years that has expired or will expire within six months.
Applicants must use the same personal information on the new passport and have a digital passport photo ready. The service is not for urgent applications.
People with lost, stolen, damaged, diplomatic, or special passports may need another process.
The wider online service is part of Canada’s move to make government services easier to access. For many Canadians, renewing online can save a trip to a passport office and avoid mailing paper forms.
The added capacity may reduce pressure during summer travel season.
Canada updated passport fees earlier this year. A five-year adult passport now costs $122.50, while a 10-year adult passport costs $163.50.
The government continues to offer its “30 Days or Free” guarantee. Applicants may qualify for a fee refund if their passport is not processed within the promised timeline.
Still, Canadians should apply well before they travel. Once renewal begins, the current passport is cancelled, so applying too close to departure can cause problems.
Before applying online, Canadians should have a digital passport photo, required identification details, a secure internet connection, and enough time before travel. IRCC says it will keep monitoring the system and may raise capacity again.
