Ontario's $138-million investment will add 1,400 student beds, new academic facilities and 1,504 university seats in Peterborough.
The Ontario government has announced $138 million in combined investments to expand student housing, improve academic facilities and increase enrolment at Trent University.
The funding includes $100 million through the Building Ontario Fund for campus development and another $38 million to support additional university seats.
The expansion aims to accommodate more students while preparing graduates for careers in sectors facing workforce shortages.
The $100-million investment will support construction of two residences at Trent University's Symons Campus in Peterborough.
The developments include Gidigaa Migizi College and Otonabee College, which together will provide approximately 1,400 beds.
The project also includes around 134,000 square feet of academic and student facilities, including lecture halls and student services.
Construction is expected to finish by August 2029.
The development forms part of a larger $384-million financing arrangement involving Trent University, the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan and Knightstone Capital Management.
Increasing on-campus accommodation could reduce demand for private rentals in Peterborough, where students compete with other residents for available housing.
The additional residences may also make campus living more accessible for students arriving from outside the region.
However, the new beds will not be available immediately. Students beginning their studies before construction finishes must explore existing university residences or private accommodation.
Housing costs, transportation and everyday expenses remain important considerations when choosing where to study.
Alongside the housing project, Ontario has committed $38 million to create 1,504 additional seats at Trent University.
The allocation includes:
Some additional seats are expected to become available during fall 2026, with further expansion planned for fall 2027.
The province hopes the investment will strengthen its workforce by providing more educational opportunities in high-demand fields.
The announcement could benefit future international students by improving campus infrastructure and expanding available academic programs.
However, increased university capacity does not automatically mean more international student admissions or changes to federal study permit requirements.
Prospective applicants must still satisfy Trent University's admission criteria and Canada's immigration requirements.
Studying in STEM or another high-demand field also does not guarantee a post-graduation work permit or permanent residence.
Students considering Trent University should assess tuition fees, current housing availability, program suitability, career opportunities and applicable immigration rules before applying.
Although the investment represents a major expansion of educational infrastructure, its benefits will emerge gradually.
For prospective students, understanding when facilities become available is just as important as knowing what the university plans to build.
