University of Toronto Tops North America for Research Output

The University of Toronto has ranked first in research output among publicly funded universities in North America, according to the August 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The Ontario university received a research output score of 75.1 in the latest ARWU results. The University of California, Los Angeles placed fourth on the same measure with 59.8, while the University of California, Berkeley ranked ninth with 52.0.

How Research Output Is Measured

The research output measure, known as PUB, looks at how many academic papers from a university are indexed in two major databases: the Science Citation Index-Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index.

The PUB score is one of six indicators used by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy to assess universities for the ARWU. More than 2,500 institutions worldwide were reviewed in the 2026 edition.

University of Toronto was the only Canadian university to score strongly enough to compete directly with major American public universities near the top of the research and academic rankings. Its result placed it ahead of several well-known U.S. institutions on the research output measure.

University of Toronto Improves Global Ranking

When all six indicators were combined, the University of Toronto placed sixth among the leading publicly funded North American universities in the comparison. The other top positions were held by major state-funded universities in the United States.

Globally, University of Toronto ranked 13th for overall research and academic performance. That marks an improvement from 14th place in the previous year's ranking and strengthens its position among the world's highest-ranked research universities.

Six Factors Shape the ARWU Ranking

The ARWU uses a mix of research volume, academic recognition and institutional performance to calculate its results.

Alumni performance accounts for 10 per cent of the score and measures the number of graduates who have received Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals.

Awards earned by current staff make up 20 per cent. This category includes Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry, medicine and economics, as well as Fields Medals in mathematics.

Another 20 per cent comes from the number of Highly Cited Researchers associated with the institution, based on researchers identified by Clarivate.

Research articles published in the journals Nature and Science also account for 20 per cent of the overall score.

The PUB category, which measures the total number of papers indexed in the two major citation databases, contributes another 20 per cent.

The final 10 per cent comes from per capita academic performance, which evaluates an institution's academic results in relation to its size.

Together, the six indicators are intended to provide a broad picture of a university's academic strength, research influence and scholarly output. U of T's particularly high PUB score shows that its researchers produced a large volume of work that appeared in major international academic indexes.

23rd Edition of Global University Ranking

The 2026 rankings are the 23rd edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Shanghai Ranking Consultancy published the results on August 15, 2026.

U of T's first-place research output score gives Canada a strong presence in a ranking otherwise dominated by major American public universities. Its move to 13th globally also shows a year-over-year improvement in its overall academic and research standing.
