Manitoba Invests $630,000 in Youth Employment Programs

Manitoba is investing $630,000 in youth employment, leadership and wellness programs aimed at helping young people build skills, find mentorship and overcome barriers to work.

The funding, announced Sept. 2, comes through the province’s From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for All program. The initiative supports community organizations involved in youth development, neighbourhood revitalization and projects designed to strengthen local communities.

Eligible non-profit organizations, municipalities and northern affairs councils can receive up to $100,000 for approved projects.

Support for Newcomer Youth

Part of the funding will go toward programs for newcomer youth who may face challenges while adjusting to life in Manitoba.

Development Assistance International will use its funding to provide academic help, mentorship, employment skills training, cultural programming and mental-health supports.

The organization has identified several barriers that can affect young newcomers, including challenges related to education, employment, social connections, well-being and community integration.

These supports are intended to help youth better understand local systems, build professional networks and develop the skills needed to move from school into the workforce.

Focus on Job Readiness

The province says funded programs will offer employment preparation, workplace skills, leadership development, mentorship, cultural learning, wellness support and community participation opportunities.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg is among the organizations receiving funding. Its program will focus on first-job opportunities for youth while giving participants a safe place to build confidence, develop relationships and gain practical experience.

The government says these projects are intended to reduce barriers to employment and help young people take a more active role in their communities.

Newcomer Support Separate From Immigration Programs

The province’s investment supports community-based employment and settlement activities, but it does not create a new immigration stream, work permit program or direct payment for newcomers.

Participation in one of these programs does not by itself make a person eligible for permanent residence or a work permit.

People planning to immigrate to Manitoba must still meet the requirements of the federal or provincial immigration pathway they intend to use, including the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program where applicable.

Building Manitoba’s Future Workforce

The funding also fits into Manitoba’s wider focus on workforce development.

Helping young people gain early work experience and practical employment skills can strengthen the province’s labour force over time.

For newcomers, learning Canadian workplace practices and building local connections may also support longer-term career development.

The province says community programs can complement formal immigration and settlement services by helping youth gain education support, mentorship, employment experience and stronger social networks.

For newcomer families already in Manitoba, the investment may provide additional local support as young people establish themselves in school, work and community life.

The announcement emphasizes practical assistance rather than immigration status.
