Canada announced new immigration processing times on April 1, 2025.
Canada has released new updates on immigration processing times as of April 1, 2025. The changes include faster timelines for various applications, such as visas, permanent residency (PR), and citizenship. These updates aim to provide applicants with more accurate expectations regarding their wait times.
Canada has reduced wait times for several citizenship and PR-related applications. The processing time for citizenship grants has dropped from 9 months to 8 months. Citizenship certificates now take 3 months instead of 4, and renouncing citizenship is faster, down from 10 months to 8 months.
For PR cards, new applications are now processed in 14 days instead of 16, and renewals take 11 days instead of 14. These shorter processing times help applicants get their documents sooner.
The processing times for sponsoring a spouse or common-law partner have remained unchanged in most cases. However, applications for parents and grandparents outside Quebec now take 36 months, up from 33 months. Quebec-based applications remain at 48 months.
For those applying for a passport, processing times remain stable. In-person applications in Canada take 10 business days, while mail-in applications take 20 business days. Urgent pick-up requests are processed by the next business day.
Some economic immigration streams saw changes in processing times. The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) through Express Entry is now faster, taking 6 months instead of 7. However, the Federal Skilled Worker Program now takes 6 months, up from 5. The Quebec Business Class processing time has also increased by 1 month, now taking 72 months.
Visitor visa processing times have improved for many countries. Applicants from India now wait 28 days instead of 61. Processing times for the United States (16 days) and Nigeria (118 days) have also improved. However, Pakistan’s processing time increased to 19 days.
Super Visa processing saw mixed changes. The wait time for India dropped by 11 days, but the U.S. timeline increased by 37 days.
For study permits, applicants from the U.S. now wait 6 weeks instead of 7. Other countries have seen little to no change.
Processing times for work permits remain steady for most applicants. Pakistan saw a slight improvement, with processing now taking 8 weeks instead of 9. However, inside Canada, work permit renewals now take 121 days, up from 115.
These updates provide applicants with clearer expectations about their immigration timelines. While some categories have seen improvements, others have slightly longer wait times. Staying updated with these processing times can help individuals plan their immigration journey more efficiently.
